Anger escalates in any system that does not tell the truth.

It’s what we don’t say.

The problem isn’t what we do.

It’s what we don’t do.

Everyone is angry.

And everyone is nice.

Very nice.

Too nice.

Which leads to…

Consequences.

There is an undercurrent.

Everyone feels it.

But no one talks about it.

An organizational cognitive dissonance.

What we say isn’t what we think.

Or even what we believe.

This creates…

Anger

Frustration

Resentment

Apathy

Disengagement

and…

Departure.

When organizations choose loyalty over honesty — anger forms under the surface. Problems get buried. Decisions directed by group-think lead to unexpected destinations.

When anger…

You have 2 choices.

What to do?

  1. Quit your job and find something else to do in the firm belief that it is this place that is the problem and that somewhere-else is the solution.
  2. Quit the way you currently approach your job and try something else with the recognition that it might not be this place but your beliefs or attitudes that are the problem.
  3. Do nothing and wait for the job fairy to fly into your home office and…

Too many rules.

“Make your rules of life brief, yet so as to embrace the fundamentals…” ~ Marcus Aurelius

You have created rules that govern how you perceive, and in some cases respond to, just about everything in your life.

You have rules that determine when you allow yourself to be happy,

Or proud,

Or to simply relax,

Even when to show love.

They generally operate without your conscious awareness and yet they are running your life.

Yes, it is very possible you chose your relationships and even your career based on these rules.

But where did these rules come from?

You really…

Do you notice what you notice?

Do you notice all the things that are working?

Do you notice the people who are getting it done?

Do you notice what you notice?

The reason it is important to notice what you notice,

is that you’ll soon note that what you are noticing

is closely tied to what you are believing.

You’ll see what you believe.

So if you want to know what you really believe;

as opposed to what you say you believe,

Then try to notice what you notice.

You are not your job. Your job is not your life.

You love your job and hate how it controls your life and affects your relationships.

When you consider your work, what role does it play in your life?

Does a difficult day at work spill over into conflict with your family?

Do you castigate yourself if you make a mistake or fail to achieve a goal?

Is your view of self dominated by the esteem you experience at work?

Or by the title you hold?

Have you ever slowed down long enough to consider the…

You will never know.

You will never have all the answers.

You will never be completely certain.

Can you learn to live with that?

Can you stop living as though you should?

The alternative to certainty isn’t fear and doubt.

It’s curiosity.

When you are certain the world becomes small.

When you are curious, the world expands.

Try filling your day with fewer periods,

And more question marks.

My thoughts on being human.

You just don’t have to believe them,

Or do what they tell you.

If you wait, you may hear another voice.

One that speaks softly,

A deeper truth,

Or a higher aspiration.

The secret is to wait,

And listen.

The subtle leadership skill that makes a huge difference

We are at our best when we creating connections. In fact, as noted in the title of this post, I think it is one of the key attributes of an effective leader. Connecting beats controlling any day of the week.

So let’s roll with that for a bit. What does it mean to create connections?

If you are in a leadership role, even on a small scale, you have only to observe the communications, people, ideas, and…

A Celebration of our Connection

A few fireworks are still going off tonight in my neighborhood. Lots of flags still adorn local yards. Yesterday we celebrated the creation of the USA. The beginning of a grand experiment that is still unfolding.

We’re pretty lucky to be living in a county that, at least in its stated intent, offers us the possibility of individual freedom. Of course, what this really means is also subject to individual interpretation. Hence we celebrate July 4th from many different perspectives. And some of us don’t celebrate at all. Some of us think it’s all a farce…

Let that set you free.

All of us are creatures of a day; the rememberer and the remembered alike. — Marcus Aurelius

Work long enough and the moment comes when you must reckon with the reality that all the time and energy you are investing or have invested is for something that will eventually fade away.

Everything you’ve created will eventually be destroyed or replaced.

All the things you stress about will cease to matter.

Today’s successes and tomorrow’s failures.

The titles and achievements.

Will be long forgotten.

Every day you push the rock up the hill. Eventually, you get…
