Small Reflections 03

You are not your job. Your job is not your life.

You hate your job and hate how it controls your life and affects your relationships.

You love your job and hate how it controls your life and affects your relationships.

When you consider your work, what role does it play in your life?

Does a difficult day at work spill over into conflict with your family?

Do you castigate yourself if you make a mistake or fail to achieve a goal?

Is your view of self dominated by the esteem you experience at work?

Or by the title you hold?

Have you ever slowed down long enough to consider the purpose of your work and what meaning you give to it? Did you ever actually choose the role that work would play in your life?

You are right to consider work as important and, in our chosen economic system, even necessary for survival, but should it be the dominant measure of happiness or meaning in your life?

When you ask yourself, who am I? — or better yet — someone asks about you at a social gathering, what if your first response? Is it your job title?

The answers of course are up to you and should be based on what you want from your life and how you want to remember the time you spent on this planet. The questions are just here for your reflection.

Something to consider as you head into a new year.

A series of short writings about our inner world which is inevitably reflected in our outer world, including how we present ourselves in our work. Maybe these simple thoughts will help you live your best intentions today.
